Place Services: House History - Researching and Understanding Your Historic Building
This course is aimed at homeowners, heritage consultants, architects and anyone interested in researching the history and development of historic buildings.
By the end of the course, you will have all the knowledge required to undertake your own research.
You will learn what sources are typically available for understanding the origins and development of historic buildings, such as historic and contemporary maps, resource books, Historic Environment Records, and the National Heritage List for England among others.
There will be a particular focus on how archival sources can bring a building's heritage significance to light and be used to inform appropriate alterations, particularly when accompanying an application for listed building consent.
The course will be led by Tim Murphy (IHBC, MCIfA), Historic Environment Manager at Place Services. Tim has experience working as an archaeologist and historic building consultant throughout the United Kingdom and Ireland. He has been involved in diverse projects and thus has extensive knowledge of the various resources available for research.
Lunch will be provided.
