Spot mushrooms and fungi this autumn

We’ve worked with our Rangers to bring you a spotters guideto some of the different types of mushrooms and fungi that you might see as you meander around the Essex Country Parks during the autumnal months.

Simply, wrap up warm and head out and see if you can discover the fungi and mushrooms that are starting to appear in the parks.

Whether you’re a keen walker or struggle to get your steps in, now is a great time to explore the great outdoors and become one with nature.

Did you know mushrooms and fungi are a vital part of a woodland ecosystem and a food source for the park’s animal inhabitants.

In fact, there are over 15,000 different species of wild mushrooms and fungi in the country.

Fungi play an important ecological role within ecosystems. They help  to recycle nutrients from dead or decaying organic matter, as well as providing food and shelter for wildlife.

Veteran trees within the parks are also extremly important for fungi and mushrooms. Not only are they essential for the diversity of plants and animals, but they're also important for the fungi that have a close relationship with certain trees.

See if you can spot the mushrooms and fungi popping up.

You might see:

• Chanterelle mushroom
• Chicken of the woods
• Giant puffball
• Fly agaric
• Jelly ear
• Oyster mushroom
• Panther cap
• Penny Bun
• Wood blewit mushroom
• Porcelain fungus

Please do not pick or touch the mushroom and fungi but feel free to take photos!

Do not pick, eat or trample any mushrooms or fungi. 

Not only are many species poisonous when consumed but you would also be breaking the by-laws of Essex Country Parks as it is illegal to pick them.
