ERO Presents Special: Aspects of Anglo-Saxon Essex
Join speakers Dr Richard Dolby and Professor Stephen Rippon for an update on the site of the Battle of Assandun and 'How ‘Anglo-Saxon’ was the East Saxon Kingdom?'
Search for the Battle of Assandun 1016AD
The talk will review progress and achievements in the 18 months since the Battlefields Trust presentation at the ERO in October 2023. Cnut is now believed to have been raiding South Cambs prior to the battle, and six Essex parishes are under investigation as the location for the battle and Cnut’s commemorative minster.
Several church site geophysical surveys have been completed, the build dates of two churches clarified by a church archaeologist, and studies have started into church patronage/ownership in 1020AD for all minster candidates. Potential battle sites are now under review with more church archaeology planned for 2025.
